Everyone who describes cresting that first dune says the same thing: the lagoon appears all at once, and what surprises them most is that the scale of the place doesn't fit in a photograph.

The place
Seen from above, the dunes look like sheets spread out in the sun—that’s where the name came from, according to the accounts of the first explorers. Beneath the sand lies a layer of rock that prevents rainwater from draining away, which is why the valley between two dunes turns into a lagoon: fresh, warm, and clear water in the middle of what looks like a desert.
The dune field is between five and seven thousand years old and is still forming. The wind moves this sand up to ten centimeters a day, so the pattern you’ll photograph isn’t the same as last year’s—nor will it be the same as next year’s.
Fewer than 100 people live there, in two villages surrounded by vegetation. In one of them, Queimada dos Britos, thirteen families make their living from fishing and raising livestock: it can only be reached on foot, after more than eight hours of walking through dunes and lagoons.

From June to September. The rains fall between January and May, and it takes a few weeks for the lagoons to fill up, so July and August are usually the peak season—white dunes with the lagoons at their highest level.

Lençóis Park Ecotour
We started out as a guesthouse, welcoming visitors who came to Barreirinhas to see the “1s.” It was by listening to guests returning from their tours that we learned what wasn’t working: too little time at each lagoon, a crowded vehicle, and the sun high in the sky right at photo time.
Ecotour was founded to fix that. One vehicle per tour, a schedule chosen by your group, and a local guide—people who know which lagoon has filled up this month and which trail leads to it at the right time of day.
No reservation fee. We confirm the date, plan the itinerary with you, and only then finalize the booking.
